Special Screening of Bully*

Monday, June 4th, 2012 at 7:15pm

This extraordinary film follows five bullied kids at public schools in Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Iowa and Mississippi over the course of a school year, including two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her incarcerated 14-year-old daughter. With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals' offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children. This film is rated PG-13, and is not recommended for elementary-aged children.

After the movie, Project Cornerstone and CUSD students, administrators, and teachers will conduct a short panel discussion about practical and collaborative ways to deal with bullying in Silicon Valley. We urge youth, parents, schools, and youth-serving organizations to come together and take a stand.

Miss Representation*

Thursday, May 31st, 2012 at 7:00pm

Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

Film writer and director, and type 1 dad, Dan Masucci and his son Nick will be joining us from New York for this exclusive screening. A Q&A with them and other members of the Bay Area T1D community will follow the screening.

In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors.

Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective.

Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview*

May 11th - 17th, 2012, 7pm and 8:45pm

In 1995, during the making of his TV series Triumph of the Nerds about the birth of the personal computer, Bob Cringely did a memorable hour-long interview with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died in October, 2011. The film was shot 10 years after Jobs had left Apple following a bruising struggle with John Sculley, the CEO he brought into Apple. At the time of the interview Jobs was running Next, the niche computer company he had founded after leaving Apple and would later sell to his old company, enabling Jobs return to his Apple roots.

During the interview, Jobs was at his charismatic best - witty, outspoken and visionary - already anticipating the digital future that one day he would do so much to make possible. In the end, only a part of the interview was used in the series and the rest was thought lost. But recently a VHS copy was found in the series director's garage. Cleaned up with modern technology and put into context by Cringely, this is a unique and very candid interview that reveals as never before the burning passion of Steve Jobs, a passion that would go on to give us the iMac, the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

As he says in the interview, Jobs took the best and spread it around "so that everybody grows up with better things."

3 Superstars in Berlin*

Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 7:00pm

Three of the biggest names in opera come together for a once in a lifetime performance. Opera superstar Anna Netrebko returns to Berlin's stunning Waldbuhne, one of the world's most impressive open stages. Against this amazing backdrop, she is joined by her husband, baritone Erwin Schrott and star tenor Jonas Kaufman in a program that includes famous duets from Bernstein's West Side Story, Gershwin's Porgy and Bess and Puccini's Manon Lescaut, as well as popular Tango duets and arias from Mozart (Leporello's aria from Don Giovanni) and excerpts from Gounod's Faust. Accompanying the singers, Marco Armiliato conducts the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

About Anna Netrebko - Anna Netrebko is no longer just the darling of the opera world: she is enchanting audiences around the globe while continuing to cultivate the respect and admiration of opera's most devoted and demanding fans. Her beautiful, dark, and distinctive voice, together with her elegant and alluring stage presence, makes it "all but impossible to look away when she is performing." Ms. Netrebko has gone on to appear with nearly all of the world's great opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, London's Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera, the Zurich Opera, the Berlin State Opera, and Munich's Bavarian State Opera.

About Jonas Kaufmann - At 42, Jonas Kaufmann, the German tenor is one of the busiest and most celebrated singers in opera. His career has developed with extraordinary speed. The swiftness of his rise to prominence speaks both to his great talent and bankability. Mr. Kaufmann has quickly become a key component of artistic plans for the Metropolitan Opera and other major companies. His recent solo recital at the Met is the latest example of his meteoric rise in the opera world.

About Erwin Schrott - Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott has praise from both audiences and critics for his powerful and versatile singing as well as his captivating performances especially in roles by Mozart. He made his professional debut in Montevideo at the age of 22. His breakthrough came in 1998 when he won both the jury and audience prizes at the 1998 Operalia, a competition run by Plcido Domingo. He has gone on to play many roles in major opera houses in both Europe and the US.
