Their stories are interwoven with insights from experts including sociologist Janet Poppendieck, author Raj Patel and nutrition policy leader Marion Nestle; ordinary citizens like Pastor Bob Wilson and teachers Leslie Nichols and Odessa Cherry; and activists such as Witness to Hunger's Mariana Chilton, Top Chef's Tom Colicchio and Oscar®-winning actor Jeff Bridges.

Three Quarter Moon*

November 9th - 15th, 2012 3:10pm & 5:15pm

International Film Showcase Presents:

Cantankerous cabbie Hartmut has one more thing to complain about when he discovers his wife is leaving him after 30 years. Stubbornness has finally driven a permanent wedge between the man and his most important relationships, those with his wife and adult daughter. One day, six-year-old Hayat, a Turkish girl who doesn't yet know German, climbs into his taxi. Her mother is a performer who'll be leaving town, and Hayat is supposed to stay with her grandmother for a few weeks. Fate, however, intervenes once she crosses paths with the grumpy Hartmut. The equally stubborn girl disarms the wizened old man as well as the audience with her precocious performance. Soon, the joyless monotony of Hartmut's life is replaced with the relief and purpose that comes from caring for another. A lovely soundtrack reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine's bittersweet folk-pop adds feeling to this sweet, but not saccharine, tale. This endearing dramedy shows how change sometimes comes when, and from where, you least expect.

Genetic Roulette*

November 1st, 2012, 7:00pm-9:00pm

Experts expose the SERIOUS THREATS and how corporations like Monsanto hide the evidence.

NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN EVIDENCE points to genetically engineered foods as a major contributor to rising disease rates in the US population, especially among children. Gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans, pets, livestock, and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn.

Monsanto's strong arm tactics, the FDA's fraudulent policies, and how the USDA ignores a growing health emergency are also laid bare. This sometimes shocking film may change your diet, protect you and your family, and accelerate the consumer tipping point against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) already underway. Don't miss this film!

Fred Won't Move Out*

October 12-18, 2012 at 1:40pm, 3:20pm, 5:00pm

With levity and sadness, two grown children and their aging parents struggle with the decision whether the older generation should stay in the house where they have lived for fifty years. Shot in the house where the director's parents lived for close to fifty years shortly after they moved out, the film's semi-autobiographical story is memorably acted by a small ensemble cast led by Elliott Gould. Shot in sequence in three weeks with a heady mix of improvisational work by both author Richard Ledes and his cast, the film's personal approach to its subject captures a universal story uniquely told.

Calling all Queen fans...Now's your chance to watch Queen's momentous concert movie, Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live In Budapest '86 on the big screen for the first time. Remastered in high definition and 5.1 surround sound, this cinema event opens with a special 25 minute documentary feature following the legends of rock, Queen, from just after their show-stealing performance at Live Aid through the year leading up to the concert in Budapest. Staged for 80,000 ecstatic fans, the concert set includes favorite hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, I Want To Break Free and We Are The Champions. It's a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the magic of Queen at your local cinema.

As part of the hugely successful 1986 Magic Tour that, poignantly, was the last to be played by Freddie Mercury, Queen was for the first time able to include Hungary on the tour schedule. With three years to go before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was the largest concert ever staged at the Népstadion, Budapest, and the first Western Rock Concert performed in a stadium behind the then Iron Curtain. It was of such significance to the Hungarian authorities and film industry that a group of the country's top film cameramen and technicians were brought together to film it for posterity.

The resulting concert movie has been digitally re-mastered for the big screen and is introduced by a documentary feature that gives the inside track on events leading up to the Budapest concert. Using archive footage from rehearsals, interviews with the band and on the road during the Magic Tour - some of which has never been seen before - this fascinating intro feature has been specially created for the cinema release. Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest '86 is a must-see cinema event for Queen fans across the world.

Pink Ribbons, Inc*

August 24th - 30th, 2012 1:15pm & 5:25pm

The ubiquitous pink ribbons of breast cancer philanthropy - and the hand-in-hand marketing of brands and products associated with that philanthropy - permeates our culture, providing assurance that we are engaged in a successful battle against this insidious disease. But the campaign obscures the reality and facts of breast cancer - more and more women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and face the same treatment options they did 40 years ago. Yet women are also the most influential market group, buying 80 percent of consumer products and making most major household purchasing decisions. So then who really benefits from the pink ribbon campaigns - the cause or the company? And what if the very companies and products that profit from their association have actually contributed to the problem?

In showing the real story of breast cancer and the lives of those who fight it, Pink Ribbons, Inc. reveals the co-opting of what marketing experts have labeled a "dream cause."

Call + Response*

August 23rd, 2012 at 7:00pm

CALL+RESPONSE is a first of its kind feature documentary film that reveals the world's 27 million dirtiest secrets: there are more slaves today than ever before in human history. CALL+RESPONSE goes deep undercover where slavery is thriving from the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India to reveal that in 2009, Slave Traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks combined.

Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, Daryl Hannah, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Nicholas Kristof, and many other prominent political and cultural figures offer first hand account of this 21st century trade. Performances from Grammy-winning and critically acclaimed artists including Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Imogen Heap, Talib Kweli, Five For Fighting, Switchfoot, members of Nickel Creek and Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, Rocco Deluca move this chilling information into inspiration for stopping it.

Music is part of the movement against human slavery. Dr. Cornel West connects the music of the American slave fields to the popular music we listen to today, and offers this connection as a rallying cry for the modern abolitionist movement currently brewing.

There is a sea of change happening in human rights activism. The world's issues cannot be solved alone by governments and non-profits, but require community-based participation. As a feature film, CALL+RESPONSE has the unique position of being not only a ground-breaking genre-bending film, but also serves as a deft tool in the hands of 21st Century Abolitionists. We provide activists with tactile strategic online and mobile tools to fight slavery everyday. We believe this is a fight that must that is won with passion, innovation, and commitment.
